[2:34] <elfgoh> Oh our page ranking for "linux singapore" has improved to 4 :p
[2:35] <elfgoh> Kinda not quite there yet for the search "open source singapore"
[2:36] <jamestyj> nice
[2:36] <jamestyj> go LinuxNUS go!
[2:37] <elfgoh> jamestyj: you should be cheering SEO :p
[2:37] <jamestyj> elfgoh: oh you doing something actively to bump it up?
[2:38] <elfgoh> jamestyj: hmmm not consciously doing it but yea I have been making posts about local meetups
[2:38] <elfgoh> so it helps i guess
[2:38] <elfgoh> and we had a link from ZDNet
[2:41] <jamestyj> yeah
[2:41] <jamestyj> yeah so that's not SEO
[2:41] <jamestyj> that's just google doing what it does ;)
[2:42] <elfgoh> jamestyj: well what I meant was we ought to just SEO the site's content to make it targetted for "opne source singapore"
[2:43] <jamestyj> elfgoh: ah sorry i misunderstood there
[2:43] <jamestyj> i blame it on the lack of food ;)
[2:43] <elfgoh> jamestyj: is it lunch time over there?
[2:44] <jamestyj> nope
[2:44] <jamestyj> dinner time
[2:44] <jamestyj> elfgoh: and my god you should be sleeping

[13:43] <triplez> ntu oss president huh...
[13:44] <elfgoh> triplez: i gave you compliments
[13:45] <triplez> :P
[14:08] <elfgoh> triplez ruiwen icedwater: The podcast quality is outstanding!
[14:08] <triplez> thanks!
[14:11] <ruiwen> elfgoh: thanks =) the recording device was really quite good
[14:12] <elfgoh> ruiwen: was just wondering, if the transcript should be in the post instead of a separate file?
[14:12] <elfgoh> Was it intentional?
[14:13] <ruiwen> elfgoh: hm yeah.. having the entire transcript in the post might be a little cluttered i figure.. let those who want it download on their own accord?
[14:14] <elfgoh> hmmm was think a bit of javascript or css might do the trick... was hoping that might help for search engine optimization. But no biggie
[14:20] <ruiwen> mysql question: anyone know which is more efficient? using LEFT JOINs in mysql or the normal WHERE a.id = b.id? or are they the same?
[14:29] <filePeter> ruiwen: puhh...
[14:29] <filePeter> ruiwen: I know that once. *search for bookmark*
[14:33] <ruiwen> heh thanks =)
[14:33] <filePeter> ruiwen: They are not the same. And they differ a lot depending on what you're aiming to do.
[14:34] <ruiwen> filePeter: hm well i need 2-3 field per table across something like 5-7 tables
[14:34] <filePeter> So don't do a WHERE on a table and then join it. - LEFT JOIN it, but watch out:
[14:35] <filePeter> 5-7 is ok. I've done this.
[14:35] <filePeter> and it works pretty fast.
[14:35] <ruiwen> hm watch out for?
[14:36] <ruiwen> yup seems to be working somewhat now
[14:37] <filePeter> For the order of the leftjoin. Don't do a LEFTJOINS over a, b , c , d and then set WHERE b.id = d.id
[14:38] <ruiwen> oh ok.. i have something like that now
[14:38] <ruiwen> how should i get around that?
[14:38] <filePeter> In this case it will first scan the whole table of b and then join over that.
[14:39] <filePeter> Instead start joining with b then d and then the rest. It just scans b and d once, because it joins and "WHERE's" at the same time.
[14:40] <ruiwen> hm
[14:41] <ruiwen> ah ok i understand
[14:41] <ruiwen> i think.
[14:49] <filePeter> You could try to set "EXPLAIN" in front of the query when doing it manually to check...

[15:43] <ruiwen> hello andras
[15:43] <andras> hi ruiwen
[15:43] * elfgoh wonder how Ruby Meetup went
[15:43] <ruiwen> yeah justin just left a while back
[15:43] <ruiwen> he should be back later in the evening i guess
[15:44] <andras> ah :)
[15:44] <andras> ok
[15:44] <ruiwen> elfgoh: think triplez was talking about AR at the meetup.. and andras is interested in doing AR too
[15:44] <elfgoh> icic
[15:44] <ruiwen> andras: triplez = justin
[15:44] <andras> triplez mentioned an upcoming AR presentation
[15:45] <andras> that was sponsored by -- I believe -- microsoft
[15:45] <andras> so nobody was interested from the ruby group...
[15:45] <ruiwen> ic
[15:45] <dqminh> only the venue is sponsored by MS
[15:45] <ruiwen> well our hackfest venue is by microsoft
[15:45] <ruiwen> not the event itself though
[15:45] <andras> ah, I see.
[15:46] <andras> do you guys have any info on this one:
[15:47] <andras> Peter Schwartz at NUS Bukit Timah lecture
[15:47] <andras> a lecture today from a "futurologist"
[15:47] <andras> * lecture theatre
[15:49] <elfgoh> andras: Hmmmm am totally clueless about that
[15:49] <ruiwen> hm
[15:49] <ruiwen> there's a guy with "filePeter" as a handle who's around here too
[15:49] <ruiwen> though he's out now
[15:49] <andras> np -- someone said that that will be the AR demo. But it does not seem to be the case.
[15:50] <elfgoh> andras: for the hackfest?
[15:50] <andras> nope
[15:50] <andras> they see, to be unrelated
[15:51] <andras> when is the hackfest by the way?
[15:51] <ruiwen> this saturday, 8 aug
[15:55] <dqminh> from 1pm
[15:55] <dqminh> 8th Aug is PreDevCamp btw
[15:55] <dqminh> so if you are interested in webos, we might learn about it there too
[15:55] <dqminh> not sure MS is going to be happy with this
[15:55] <dqminh> :p
[15:55] <andras> do you have a page with the schedule?
[15:57] <elfgoh> andras: http://linuxnus.org/2009/08/06/linuxnus-hackfest-the-third-hack-reality/
[16:00] <andras> elfgoh: thank you
[16:01] <elfgoh> andras: You are welcomed

[16:28] <ruiwen> hello again filePeter
[16:29] <ruiwen> andras: meet filePeter
[16:29] <ruiwen> filePeter: did you meet andras as the ruby meetup recently?
[16:30] <filePeter> ruiwen: no... missed it. "Why u ask lah?"
[16:31] <ruiwen> filePeter: oh coz andras was asking about someone named Peter just now... wondering if it might've been you he was asking about
[16:33] <andras> ruiwen: probably not
[16:34] <andras> hello filePeter

[16:34] <triplez> yo
[16:34] <filePeter> Yah, did not see you here, yet. =)
[16:34] <filePeter> yo, triplez!
[16:34] <andras> that Peter is some kind of information hacker from Berkeley
[16:35] <filePeter> hmmmm... bsd.
[16:35] <triplez> ruiwen: just bought the zoom h2. that'll be a better recorder for stereo with 4 mics
[16:36] <elfgoh> triplez: my colleagues were trying to get the HoN beta keys yesterday... to bad for them " The limit has been reached"
[16:36] <triplez> oh... reached already?
[16:37] <triplez> damn
[16:37] <elfgoh> yea
[16:37] <elfgoh> but i think they will release keys again
[16:37] <triplez> oh well... i only have 3 keys then
[16:37] <triplez> how many do you have?
[16:37] <elfgoh> i got 2
[16:37] <triplez> and ruiwen has 1 more
[16:37] <triplez> so 6 keys should be good enough!!
[16:37] <triplez> ;)
[16:37] <elfgoh> 3v3
[16:37] <filePeter> Which keys?
[16:37] <ruiwen> triplez: ooh yay better recordings!
[16:38] <triplez> well i have my own key...
[16:38] <elfgoh> filePeter: Beta Keys for Heroes of Newerth
[16:38] <triplez> elfgoh has his own
[16:38] <triplez> ruiwen has his own?
[16:38] <filePeter> elfgoh: Ah.... :-)
[16:38] <triplez> ruiwen: yes... better recordings. now arrange for the next linuxnus podcast
[16:38] <ruiwen> Yes Sir!
[16:39] <triplez> are you looking at daniel ng + harish pillay or just one each?

[16:39] <ruiwen> triplez: need to figure that out a little more..
[16:40] <ruiwen> triplez: also wondering if we should pile on so many red hats at one go
[16:40] <triplez> or do you want to do a normal episode for the next round?
[16:41] <elfgoh> triplez: ruiwen. Well maybe darrel chua may make a good interview candidate
[16:41] <triplez> who's darrel chua?
[16:41] <elfgoh> triplez: he is the driver behing SLMG and FOSA i think
[16:41] <triplez> didn't we do fosa the previous episode?
[16:42] <ruiwen> elfgoh: darrel was already on episode 1
[16:42] <ruiwen> yeah
[16:42] <elfgoh> ruiwen: oops
[16:42] <ruiwen> so was david rigby and tom goh
[16:42] * elfgoh hides
[16:42] <triplez> what other OSS is there in singapore besides redhat?
[16:42] <ruiwen> am thinking maybe one of the SRB ppl? choon keat/chu yeow? (just throwing out some names i remember)
[16:43] <ruiwen> triplez: novell is here too
[16:43] <elfgoh> triplez: we have a whole list on linuxNUS.org
[16:43] <ruiwen> or the python group perhaps
[16:43] <triplez> or we can do a normal linux news update podcast for the next episode
[16:43] <triplez> i dunno... like episode 0?
[16:44] <ruiwen> also can
[16:44] <ruiwen> can talk about stuff going on in the community at large
[16:44] <ruiwen> i don't mind that
[16:44] <triplez> well what i really want to do one day is to get the OSS user groups together or 1 big podcast interview
[16:44] <triplez> how does that sound?
[16:45] <triplez> or = for
[16:45] <elfgoh> triplez: ruiwen well i think PUG will like a podcast to plug in some publicity for Pycon 2010
[16:45] <triplez> when's pycon 2010?
[16:45] <triplez> isn't it a little too soon?
[16:46] <triplez> 9-10 june 2010... err... a little too soon don't you think?
[16:46] <elfgoh> triplez: sorry my bad
[16:46] <elfgoh> http://apac.pycon.org/
[16:46] <ruiwen> triplez: might be a little difficult to pull everyone in for a massive recording.. but i agree.. it should be fun
[16:46] <elfgoh> But i think there will be a call for papers soon i think
[16:47] <triplez> well not everyone... rather the user group leads
[16:47] <ruiwen> elfgoh: triplez: we can always do an episode with PUG first.. and one more to plug PyCon next year
[16:47] <elfgoh> ruiwen: triplez: I will do a plug for the current podcast on tuxmachines?
[16:47] * honcheng (n=honcheng@cm6.eta204.maxonline.com.sg) Quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
[16:47] <elfgoh> maybe on distrowatch.... if we can meet the criteria ( if there is one)
[16:48] <ruiwen> elfgoh: sure =)
[16:48] <triplez> when is SFD?
[16:48] <ruiwen> elfgoh: we can mail victoria from zdnet too i figure.. see if she's interested
[16:48] <ruiwen> triplez: sept 18-19 i think
[16:51] <triplez> well since it's coming up in september...
[16:51] <triplez> why don't we have the next podcast about SFD?
[16:52] <ruiwen> um we could.. though it was plugged somewhat already in episode 1
[16:52] <triplez> but that's in may
[16:52] <ruiwen> also not sure how progress is coming along with SFD
[16:52] <ruiwen> well we can ask the organisers to see if they have anything to update
[16:54] <triplez> hehhe... lemme listen to episode 1 first and see what was left out about SFD
[16:54] <triplez> because the episode seems to be more FOSA rather than sfd
[16:58] <triplez> ok... gonna test out this voice recorder
[17:02] <triplez> wow... compared the episode 2 audio quality with episode 1... huge difference

[17:22] <ruiwen> eh?
[17:24] <triplez> who's in charge of FSD?
[17:24] <filePeter> Yeah, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Singapore#Pop_and_Rock_music
[17:24] <triplez> we can do an episode on just purely FSD... episode 1 doesn't have much about it
