[3:23] <ruiwen> elfgoh: i guess they don't have to be tangible thogh
[3:23] <ruiwen> *though
[3:25] <elfgoh> ruiwen: I think we should study more in depth how other hackerspaces function, as well as do case studies on what hacker groups in Singapore are lacking.
[3:26] <ruiwen> heh what hacker groups in singapore? =P

[4:05] <ruiwen> any comments on the wiki icedwater?

[4:08] <icedwater> Woah, you made the whole thing yourself? :P
[4:09] <ruiwen> uh.. the text.. not pbworks =P
[4:11] <icedwater> I know :P
[4:11] <icedwater> Just now I was being lousy at HoN...
[4:12] <icedwater> Some Singaporean dude told me 'cb la' and 'go back to playing something less advanced, like dota'
[4:12] <ruiwen> haha
[4:12] <ruiwen> so friendly
[4:12] <icedwater> And he was complaining all throughout the game ****** L;A
[4:12] <icedwater> So it came to a point where I was criticising him for his English :P
[4:13] <icedwater> Between deaths, of course.
[4:13] <icedwater> He was saying something like
[4:13] <ruiwen> haha
[4:13] <icedwater> 'I got the shame to practice first' because I told him something like 'You weren't born an expert in DoTA, were you?'
[4:14] <icedwater> And he was all 'at least i got shame'
[4:14] <icedwater> 'i got practice first'
[4:15] <ruiwen> all shame and no patience eh?
[4:15] <icedwater> And then I told him, 'Yup, apparently you didn't practice your English enough, eh.'
[4:15] <icedwater> So he went 'don't come and talk to me about english boy'
[4:15] <icedwater> 'you want to compares intellect is it'
[4:15] <icedwater> 'i'm sure yours is nowhere near mine'
[4:16] <icedwater> ... to which my reply was, as expected:
[4:16] <icedwater> 'I agree.'
[4:16] <ruiwen> haha you should have thanked him for the set up
[4:16] <icedwater> Well, he didn't talk for quite some time after that...
[4:17] <icedwater> I broke my no-argue-with-Internet-idiots policy.
[4:17] <icedwater> Because if you ever sling mud with someone else, you both get dirty ... or something about Internet, arguments and idiots :P
[4:18] <icedwater> I need more practice with my professionalism. Maybe I'll join a game where he's playing next time.
[4:19] <icedwater> Oh, and if someone ever curses and swears at one of our [linuxNUS] clan without provocation, like *cough*coolsilver87*cough*, you'll know who it is.

[10:26] <wye> it the uml guide, i run uml kernel with fedora kernel, but i am confused with both notification. as far as i know a kernel control processes, handle memory management and so on, but since it runs with fedora kernel, how it interacts with the host kernel?
[10:26] <wye> i am using ubuntu as the host
[10:28] <wye> if i visualized the memory space as a flat area, how does the host view the uml process in memory space?
[10:30] <triplez_cell> there is a memory manager that maps the memory
[10:31] <wye> do you mean memory manager in the host?
[10:31] <triplez_cell> that memory manager takes care of the memory requests and returns the address to use
[10:32] <triplez_cell> so what are you exactly talking about? virtualization?
[10:32] <triplez_cell> you have a host Linux machine. and what's your guest?
[10:33] <wye> i do not understand...is it uml?
[10:34] <triplez_cell> oh user mode Linux

[14:38] <elfgoh1> solarwind: I see
[14:38] <solarwind> so what activities do you guys do actually?
[14:38] <elfgoh1> solarwind: well the logs will give you a better idea of the chat activity here for starters. For events, we take part in external events and organise our own ones.
[14:38] <elfgoh1> hang on a sec
[14:38] <elfgoh1> solarwind: http://linuxNUS.org/category/events/
[14:38] <solarwind> as in, do you tinker around with different distros, compile your own linux OS, stuff like that?
[14:38] <solarwind> besides the games
[14:38] <elfgoh1> solarwind: the games are a very very recent addition
[14:38] <elfgoh1> yea I do try out and run different distros
[14:38] <elfgoh1> Some here compile their own kernels
[14:38] <elfgoh1> some make packages
[14:38] <elfgoh1> We used to have a knoppix remastering project, but think there hasn't been anyone following up on that
[14:38] <elfgoh1> Server wise, some of us have some hands on practice with our server on opensource.nus.edu.sg

[19:22] <triplez_cell> I'm still here. interesting.
[19:23] <yq> hey triplez
[19:23] <yq> triplez_cell:
[19:23] <triplez> hey ho
[19:24] <yq> any developments on your research?
[19:25] <triplez> oh yah
[19:25] <triplez> i had a few more thoughts regarding the developer
[19:26] <triplez> it seems there is a psychological factor too
[19:26] <triplez> in terms of how egoistic certain types of developers can be
[19:26] <triplez> and wondering how that can be overcome
[19:26] <yq> heah. going into behavioral sciences
[19:27] <triplez> and also boiling down to the certain conflicts between the maturity of a developer and the type of tools they use
[19:27] * JeremiahViztree (n=Jeremiah@cm201.sigma173.maxonline.com.sg) Quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host))
[19:27] <triplez> yah... all i can say is i'm getting myself into a bloody deep field
[19:28] <triplez> which i think i'll just thread on lightly first in order not to spiral down the road of overwhelming load of work
[19:28] <yq> haha still going to jump into it?
[19:29] <yq> cool =P
[19:29] <yq> hope u dont get too bored with the paper writing part

[19:32] <triplez> for interesting stuff i can write nonstop
[19:32] <yq> ay. lemme see lemme see
[19:33] <triplez> haha... not my research articles yet... i've yet to write about it
[19:33] <yq> orh
[19:33] <yq> but research articles tend to be on the boring side mah..
[19:33] <triplez> yeah...
[19:33] <triplez> well just go to my blog... i need to start writing more too
[19:33] <triplez> www.justinlee.sg
[19:33] <yq> got it
[19:34] <triplez> i write too much... imo... when i have an idea i just babble on
[19:35] * kelvinq (n=kelvinq@bb219-74-81-119.singnet.com.sg) Quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host))
[19:35] <triplez> but yeah... i'll probably write something about my research over the weekend... this weekend is light for me... no events or anything
[19:35] <triplez> just chilling out
[19:35] <yq> hmm i think its just like 2 school of thoughts
[19:36] <yq> some blog in a way... like just 4-5 short paras and to the point
[19:36] <yq> some go deep into details
[19:36] <triplez> so one of the things that someone was discussing with me is not to forget the human aspect of a developer
[19:37] <yq> we did talk about this the other day didnt we
[19:37] <triplez> because in a developer culture, i think there seems to be 1 head honcho
[19:37] <yq> they psyche
[19:37] <yq> theres another interesting.
[19:37] <yq> thing.
[19:37] <triplez> yeah we did... briefly... but that didn't got me thinking about caring how they function on an emotional level
[19:38] <triplez> yeah so that 1 head honcho is usually the egoistic "i'm always right" kind of guy
[19:38] <yq> was talking to some people.. its like they are hiring python people as compared to others because of the developers characteristics ( he said pythoners tend to write cleaner code and comment more )
[19:38] <triplez> and apparently that's usually drives the direction of how the rest of the developers work
[19:39] <triplez> not really
[19:39] <yq> well it was just an interesting way of seeing things i thought
[19:39] <triplez> so that's where we come to the maturity of the developer and how the language fits into it
[19:39] <yq> i see
[19:40] <triplez> so i dunno... but on one hand... a not-so-matured developer picking up a dynamic language given all that power
[19:40] <triplez> will not be able to fully utilize the language to its full extent
[19:40] <triplez> and even worse, use it for writing sloppy code
[19:40] <triplez> on the other hand, a matured developer will be able to create awesome stuff with that power
[19:41] <triplez> and maturity doesn't come with age and experience, although that plays some factors i would think
[19:41] <yq> hah maybe it comes with lines of code read
[19:42] <triplez> i dunno... but i do know of people with 20 years experience yet code like a dumb monkey
[19:42] <triplez> and i also know people fresh graduates who can code and create beauty out of such powerful language
[19:42] <triplez> there's also discipline involved with the developer
[19:43] <yq> such as?
[19:43] <triplez> so i realise there are certain types of developers with discipline and structure... those seem to like OOP
[19:43] <yq> tyring to follow software design principles?
[19:44] <triplez> whereas those that seem "sloppy" and "egoistic" yet can produce such wonderful code comes naturally to them... they like fluidness and no constraints
[19:44] <yq> *those who follow
[19:44] <triplez> those seem to like dynamic languages
[19:44] <triplez> well not follow software design principles... but structure
[19:44] <yq> hah.. your like talking bout art
[19:45] <triplez> well... design is everywhere
[19:46] <triplez> so... yeah... i dunno... that really got me thinking that depending on the type of developers... it seems to me that they require different experiences altogether
[19:47] <triplez> so i admit that i come structure side of things
[19:47] <yq> haha im watching your linux sucks video posting
[19:47] <triplez> oh that's awesome shit i tell you
[19:47] <triplez> everything he says is correct...
[19:47] <triplez> and he doesn't come at it very insulting but in a very logical professional manner
[19:48] <yq> heah
[19:48] <triplez> which is what the OSS community needs
[19:48] <yq> not just blind worshipping?
[19:48] <triplez> exactly... know your problems... then fix it
[19:48] <triplez> don't live with it
[19:49] <triplez> hence the "egoistic" part of things
[19:50] <triplez> which i'm slowly starting to see in the world of OSS... :P even among developers
[19:50] <triplez> and i wonder how to overcome that
[19:51] <yq> ooo they are finally starting the presentation haha
