[0:00] <hyperair> Silverwolf: and i want USB support which ESXI clearly doesn't have.
[0:00] <Silverwolf> hyperair, me too ;)
[0:00] <hyperair> i don't want to pay for bells and whistles i don't use
[0:00] <jmarki> hyperair: do you even have enough ram for virtualbox?
[0:00] <Silverwolf> hyperair, lol ofcause not. It is server virtualization software. For that you go VMware workstation
[0:00] <hyperair> which esxi clearly has
[0:00] <hyperair> jmarki: i have. enough RAM to run a 768M VM.
[0:00] <Silverwolf> hyperair, esxi are for servers
[0:00] <jmarki> wah....
[0:01] <hyperair> jmarki: with vmware, i can barely even get up to 256M
[0:01] <jmarki> hyperair: vmware has virtual ram... basically a file!
[0:01] <hyperair> jmarki: loads of stuff get stuffed into swap, but otherwise it's fine
[0:01] <hyperair> oh yeah sure, a file. how does that differ from virtual swap?
[0:02] <jmarki> eh? virtualbox requires actual ram allocated to it?
[0:02] <hyperair> no
[0:02] <hyperair> from what i've noticed, you can start your VM without enough RAM
[0:02] <jmarki> no meh??? then how/where does it allocate ram?
[0:03] <hyperair> as long as you clear up enough on the host when the guest starts asking for more
[0:03] <jmarki> really?
[0:03] <hyperair> yep
[0:04] <hyperair> unlike vmware which shoves everything it can to the swap and forces all memory for the VM to be in your RAM
[0:04] <jmarki> okay, maybe i start too many at one time... and immediately started swapping
[0:04] <icedwater> jmarki: How many VMs did you start at once ... and why?
[0:04] <hyperair> to simulate more machines in a closed network?
[0:05] <hyperair> i do that, at least
[0:05] <jmarki> O.o does vmware require dedicate RAM?! i always put a 2gb file for RAM...
[0:05] <hyperair> if vmware seriously just used a file for RAM, it'd be dog slow
[0:05] <hyperair> do you seriously believe a VM can run with all its RAM in a file?
[0:05] <jmarki> hmm... about 5, the last time i did that. 2 windows 7, 2 opensolaris, and 1 debian
[0:05] <icedwater> hyperair: Ah, OK.
[0:07] <hyperair> jmarki: how much RAM for each?
[0:08] <jmarki> hyperair: can't exactly remember how i came to the conclusion about the dedicated ram. that was a long long time ago, on my notebook
[0:08] <hyperair> jmarki: iirc, the file is for stuffing your RAM to disk when you freeze the VM's state
[0:08] <jmarki> 512gb to 2gb depending?
[0:09] <jmarki> and immediately everything started swapping... =D
[0:10] <hyperair> heheh
[0:15] <hyperair> i usually keep my VMs small unless they'er windows
[0:15] <Silverwolf> jmarki, hyperair VMware share the memory between the VMs and only use what the OS uses, which mean what is free is left to the host os
[0:16] <Silverwolf> Therefore you can easily allocate 8gb logical memory even if you only have 4gb
[0:17] <hyperair> Silverwolf: i wasn't aware of that. back when i used vmware server with the gtk client, it forced everything else into the swap and kept its memory on top. and when i used the server with the web client.. even more disaster. the client (inside firefox) began competing with the server to see which process could take more memory.
[0:17] <hyperair> needless to say it thrashed and i had to force a hard-reboot
[0:17] <Silverwolf> hyperair, haha cool :p
[0:18] <Silverwolf> hyperair, hmm, maybe vmware server dosent. vmware workstation/esx is the only read products to use. The server version is shit compared to them
[0:18] <jmarki> Silverwolf: that behaviour hasn't changed? it used to be like that, but now i'm not sure...
[0:19] <hyperair> Silverwolf: well workstation is a paid product. i'm going to just continue using virtualbox and be happy.
[0:19] <hyperair> Silverwolf: and please don't start on the whole paid product = better thing again
[0:19] <Silverwolf> jmarki, maybe I havent used vmware server since version 1
[0:20] <Silverwolf> hyperair, hehe, in the vmware case it is really a difference :) But if youre not using the advance features in vmware workstation, then it dosent make sense I agree
[0:22] <jmarki> Silverwolf: yeah, that distinction seems a bit blurred now, i think... general rule of thumb now seems to be SUM( RAM_GUES ) + RAM_HOST = Total_System_Specs
[0:24] <jmarki> hyperair: some opensource things aren't really stable... i was pushing for a ultravnc deployment. worked very well during testing, tanked during demo. went to get symantec pcanywhere instead
[0:25] <Silverwolf> jmarki, what did you use it for?
[0:25] <hyperair> Silverwolf: yeah, for example the whole up to 256 cpus thing. my notebook only has two. can you imagine how strenuous it would be to emulate that many? in the first place, vmware does virtualization not emulation, so if i wanted emulation i'd go the way of qemu instead.
[0:26] <hyperair> jmarki: some, not all. the things that do really matter are usually stable
[0:26] <hyperair> what's ultravnc anyway?
[0:26] <jmarki> vnc? specifically for windows
[0:27] <hyperair> i'd just use remote desktop
[0:27] <hyperair> but i understand that on the lesser versions of windows, remote dekstop doesn't exist
[0:27] <jmarki> Silverwolf: to connect to session 0 aka console mode in windows. that helps bypass some application restrictions. =p
[0:28] <Silverwolf> hyperair, all vmware virtualization products do emulation. the max there is supported for vmware esx is 8 cpu per vm and 64 in total
[0:28] <jmarki> hyperair: remote desktop is not session 0, aka console mode. some applications doesn't like that
[0:28] <hyperair> Silverwolf: well then, how much stress do you want to put on your laptop?
[0:28] <hyperair> 256 cpus?
[0:28] <Silverwolf> jmarki, oki. One of my friends use it is his company to support all their customers
[0:28] <Silverwolf> hyperair, it dosent support 256 cpus
[0:29] <hyperair> jmarki: eh?
[0:29] <hyperair> Silverwolf: i thought i saw that on the feature list
[0:29] <hyperair> of esx
[0:29] <jmarki> Silverwolf: yeah, but that is for direct connection. but if you try to use more than one connections at the same time, things get hairy
[0:30] <Silverwolf> jmarki, uh, you mean more connection to the same vnc server?
[0:30] <jmarki> works fine for desktop support, not for application deployment
[0:30] <jmarki> yeah. it's supposed to reject the connection. worked during my testing
[0:31] <Silverwolf> jmarki, one of my friends implemented a proxy to handle multiple connection to the same vnc server.
[0:31] <jmarki> didn't, spectacularly during my demo
[0:31] <Silverwolf> hehe
[0:32] <jmarki> hmm... haven't thought of proxying it. but then again, never thought i would need to
[0:32] <jmarki> my boss's best answer, "well, it's not very stable, isn't it?"
[0:32] <Silverwolf> haha
[0:32] <hyperair> heheh
[0:32] <Silverwolf> Sleep tight
[0:32] <jmarki> gave up saving the dough

[0:39] <Silverwolf> btw.. I have a complain :p
[0:40] <Silverwolf> At the linuxnus site... Why is event information always posted one or two days before the actual event. It is hard to plan after :p
[0:40] <jmarki> =D
[0:41] <elfgoh_> Silverwolf: ok noted :x
[0:41] <jmarki> we are the right-now people!

[0:44] <elfgoh_> dqminh: icedwater jmarki|hiding do you think we should ask for the Comcen audit then?
[0:45] <elfgoh_> How big is the audit anyway?
[0:45] <jmarki|hiding> audit? or auditorium?
[0:45] <elfgoh_> Or do you guys think we should just stick with our 'happy problem'?
[0:46] <jmarki|hiding> stick with happy problem

[0:50] <icedwater> Auditorium would be nice, maybe for the next event. Redirecting people now wouldn't be too nice, I think.
[0:51] <elfgoh_> dqminh: ping. Any updates on arrangements with lecturers for triplez to advertise during the lectures?

[15:17] <icedwater> Isn't Selenium a rare element...
[15:17] <icedwater> Or was it found in oysters? Can't recall.
[15:19] <icedwater> Oh, any comments on the HTC Magic?
[15:20] * hyperair (n=hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) Quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
[15:20] <icedwater> I've pretty much made up my mind to buy it - but I would like to ask nonetheless.
[15:20] <ruiwen> icedwater: i like it =)
[15:20] <ruiwen> icedwater: it's a super finger/face/gel/snack-print magnet though
[15:20] <icedwater> Bit concerned about the touchscreen keyboard though, had a few issues with the one on the Hero last time I tried.
[15:21] <ruiwen> icedwater: if it's the lag, turn off the haptic feedback.. it improves the reaction time
[15:21] <icedwater> It's the finding keys and not pressing the 5 surrounding letters :P
[15:22] <ruiwen> oh heh .. hm.. yeah.. not as accurate as i was with my old t9 i think.. but it's manageable
[15:24] <icedwater> Anyone else would rather not buy the HTC Magic?
[15:24] <icedwater> But is looking at, for instance, a Nokia Esomethingortheother?
[15:26] <icedwater> Actually, those keyboards are tinier.
[15:26] <icedwater> Hm.
