[13:21] <dwu> inimical: hrm today?
[13:27] <icedwater> Yeah, I'm going over in a while to deliver the PC I promised them.
[13:28] <icedwater> dwu: That monitor you used over the weekend, too.
[13:30] <maxus> hi folks
[13:30] <maxus> i'm really excited with the good hardware support in ubuntu
[13:30] <maxus> worked like a clock on my netbook
[13:31] <maxus> only issue is the microphone
[13:31] <maxus> but i hope that can be fixed
[13:31] <maxus> question is should i install the plain vanilla ubuntu or the netbook edition
[13:31] <maxus> do i need the extra stuff in the netbook one?
[13:32] <maxus> it's 950MB compared to an iso image of around 700
[13:32] <maxus> ubuntu is so snappy and smooth compared to winxp
[13:35] <icedwater> maxus: I guess vanilla works fine :)
[13:39] <elfgoh> maxus: UNR is more efficient with screen real estate
[13:40] <icedwater> Also, who's up for supper on Saturday night?
[13:40] <icedwater> Or, Friday even, if you guys can make it.
[13:40] <icedwater> elfgoh: How much more efficient?
[13:40] <maxus> elfgoh: good point
[13:40] <elfgoh> maxus: And Ubuntu 9.10 arriving on 29/10 fyi
[13:41] <maxus> elfgoh: guess i can always upgrade
[13:41] <icedwater> Heh, just in time?
[13:41] <elfgoh> icedwater: enough for me to suggest that you google up some reviews and look at the screenshots
[13:41] <maxus> UNR is the netbook edition?
[13:41] <maxus> an N for Netbook
[13:41] <maxus> ah
[13:41] <icedwater> Upgrade path would probably be smoother with the vanilla edition I guess.
[13:41] <elfgoh> maxus: R for remix
[13:42] <icedwater> Also, I've used the netbook remix and seen the launcher before... it was pretty handy, but I'm not sure what else you mean by efficient with screen real estate.
[13:42] <icedwater> elfgoh: How about you tell me what *you* think about it, instead of quoting reviews and screenshots?
[13:42] <icedwater> Call me lazy, but I want to hear it from you :)
[13:43] <maxus> so you're saying it will look like this
[13:43] <maxus> http://www.tuxradar.com/files/unr1.jpg
[13:43] <maxus> http://www.tuxradar.com/files/unr1.jpg
[13:44] <maxus> what? UNR makes it very easy to run programs by listing all the available applications directly on your desktop
[13:44] <elfgoh> icedwater: A picture speaks a thousand words. That's why I told you to google it
[13:44] <maxus> I'm not really sure if i want that
[13:44] <elfgoh> icedwater: Lazy
[13:44] <maxus> sounds like a kindergarden mode
[13:44] <elfgoh> icedwater: Am using the pictures to support my Pov
[13:44] <maxus> okay, this is useful
[13:45] <maxus> But the real surprise comes when you launch any program, because they nearly all launch automatically maximised and with their window decoration (the brown bar at the top) removed.
[13:45] <maxus> Instead of window decorations, UNR launches programs as if they were browser tabs.
[13:45] <maxus> but part of the magic of UNR is that work has been put in to save pixels everywhere and eventually all those savings add up: you really do get more data on your screen with UNR
[13:46] <maxus> I'm not sure if i like the idea of having everything maximized
[13:47] <maxus> i sure hope the UNR lets you normalize windows
[13:48] <maxus> lol - this is a ghastly example
[13:48] <maxus> http://www.tuxradar.com/files/unr5.jpg
[13:49] <maxus> and oops
[13:49] <maxus> The only other problem - also minor - is Gnome's viciously slow code for reading icons, which is compounded by the fact that UNR won't change tabs until the icons for that tab have been loaded.
[13:50] <thelaptop|work> ooo are we talking about UNR? i don't really use it on my 701
[13:56] <icedwater> Hm
[13:56] <icedwater> I've been using eeebuntu for a while now, I don't use my 701 frequently but when I do I like that.
[13:57] <icedwater> It's got some support for the asus hotkeys, so that's good, I can change the screen brightness using the keyboard.
[13:58] <icedwater> elfgoh: While a picture occasionally speaks a thousand words, or somewhere in that order, I would prefer drafting a thousand words because then you have more control over how people understand the words as opposed to hoping they draw the right conclusions from your picture :P
[13:59] <maxus> screen brightness worked right out of the box without UNR
[13:59] <icedwater> Also, this is no excuse for plopping pictures and links instead of really sharing what you think :)
[13:59] <icedwater> maxus: Which laptop are you using?
[13:59] <maxus> Acer inspire one
[14:00] <maxus> Hari Raja sales edition
[14:00] <maxus> :p
[14:00] <maxus> i think it's the same as the ordinary one
[14:00] <icedwater> You were the one who ... yeah, I recall.
[14:00] <icedwater> Yeah, it should be the same. Acer Aspire One, eh... which colour did you get? :P
[14:00] <maxus> they didn't ask me which color i wanted
[14:00] <maxus> i just got one
[14:00] <elfgoh> icedwater: Have you seen screenshots of UNR prior to this conversation?
[14:00] <maxus> it is black
[14:00] <maxus> and i like that
[14:00] * SilverWolf (n=SilverWl@137.132.228.5) has joined #linuxnus
[14:02] <icedwater> elfgoh: As mentioned, I used it before, memory needed refreshing as I'd had it wiped for ziyong to install Android I think.
[14:04] <elfgoh> icedwater: it's one thing to ask for a thousand words before seeing or refreshing your memory with the screenshots, and quite another to ask after seeing the screenshots. At least IMHO.
[14:06] <icedwater> Well, they are different things, but equally valid in my opinion.
[14:08] <icedwater> Now that I *have* seen the screenshots, what is your point?
[14:08] <icedwater> I think I like vanilla Ubuntu better, and I don't see the need for everything to be maximised by default.
[14:08] <elfgoh> icedwater: Imagine if you had never see a painting of Mona Lisa. I could use a million words to describe it. But the appreciation and understanding of the description will be so much more enhanced if you had seen the actual painting itself
[14:09] <icedwater> Well... actually... you have a point, but having seen the Mona Lisa I would have to say ... nope.
[14:09] <icedwater> *wink*
[14:09] <elfgoh> icedwater: For instance, i could bitch about a flaw in Mona Lisa's left eye.......
[14:10] <icedwater> Also, one problem with normal Ubuntu, I guess, is that some dialogs run out of the bottom edge of the screen. So that is one area where UNR wins, I guess, though unr5.jpg is kind of ugly.
[14:10] <elfgoh> it's bigger than the right eye
[14:10] <icedwater> elfgoh: Are your eyes exactly the same size?
[14:10] <ruiwen> does anyone know it this is legit: http://sites.google.com/site/chromeoslinux/home ?
[14:10] <icedwater> If you have an answer, how did you measure them?
[14:11] <elfgoh> icedwater: no they are not, but that was really a hypothetical argument, and hence the usage of "could bitch"
[14:11] <icedwater> Why not try it, ruiwen? I think it looks all right... no harm trying it right? It's just an ISO :P
[14:12] <icedwater> Even better, it's a VM thingamajig.
[14:12] <ruiwen> icedwater: the question if it's packaged from google
[14:12] <ruiwen> icedwater: ie. an official thing
[14:13] <icedwater> Well, I am not sure. Also, if it were official wouldn't there be more info about it?
[14:14] <freeside> funny y'all mention the mona lisa, i was just thinking this picture kind of had that quality: http://mengwong.com/photography/20090929-imatch/dsc_1917.html
[14:15] <elfgoh> freeside: I have a hypothesis that most people's master eye is bigger than their other eye
[14:15] <icedwater> elfgoh: That needed to be phrased better, then. It implied there *was* a flaw and your choice was whether or not to bitch about it, hence the *could*.
[14:15] <ruiwen> icedwater: yeah, didn't notice any official announcement of any sort, so was wondering
[14:16] <icedwater> Yeah, also, I would think the official team would have it on something other than a Google Site.
[14:16] <ruiwen> icedwater: you do appear to have some time now though, wanna give it a test run for all of us?
[14:16] <icedwater> Heh, I don't have virtualbox installed on my amd64.
[14:16] <icedwater> I could test it in Windows though.
[14:17] <elfgoh> icedwater: Well I set a trap and you fell right in.
[14:18] <elfgoh> It was done at an unconscious level though
[14:19] <icedwater> elfgoh: Er... what trap?
[14:19] <elfgoh> Feeling mischieviously malicious today
[14:19] * elfgoh waves to icewater in the pithole and seals the pithole entrance
[14:20] * icedwater defines himself as not being in a trap, and walks away, chuckling at poor icewater.
[14:20] <icedwater> I don't think anyone here saw anything that looked vaguely like a trap... but if you insist, then good for you :)
[14:21] <icedwater> ruiwen: Also, moot point. Downloading the vmx.tar.gz gives me all of 0 bytes, I can't use it either way.
[14:21] <icedwater> -1 for credibility then. Or maybe they're just careless.
[14:22] <ruiwen> icedwater: i guess not official then, their download link is on some wuala, which i figure google won't use for their own releases
[14:22] <icedwater> Also, if anyone here would like to point out the trap which elfgoh claims to have set @ 14:18 and show me *why* I am, beyond the shadow of a doubt, trapped, I would like to be enlightened so as not to fall into any of the further traps that there might be outside :)
[14:23] <icedwater> ruiwen: However, the .iso.gz seems to be OK... will check the md5sum.

[14:25] <maxus> in Uni i had a professor with a really creepy eye

[14:26] <icedwater> Hm
[14:26] <maxus> some people's eyes can be different due to accidents or injuries though, so you can be tricked
[14:27] <maxus> and the facial shape can be formed by always sleeping on one side
[14:27] <icedwater> Oh dear, I always sleep on my back ... is the back of my head flatter then? :P
[14:27] <maxus> icedwater: do you sleep on your back all throughout the night
[14:29] <maxus> i really scared my grandmother when she was hosting me one night my parents were away, because i fell asleep in one position and was in the exact same position next morning
[14:29] <maxus> she wondered if i was still alive

[14:35] <elfgoh> maxus: remember to backup 1st btw. 1 parition for windows, 1 for /, 1 for /home. yes to the 40GB question
[14:35] <kelvinq> ruiwen: nope. who is jiayuan?
[14:36] <thelaptop|work> maxus: 16 partitions of 10GB each

[14:37] <kelvinq> oh yes. now i remember. :)
[14:38] <maxus> elfgoh: what about swap partition, is that something that the installer makes for me, or will i need to dedicate one?
[14:38] <inimical> icedwater: after reading the above conversation i'd have to say you are an extremely pedantic person :)
[14:39] <elfgoh> maxus: ah yes and 1 for swap too. Am not too familiar with the installer. But the safest would be to dedicate one for swap
[14:39] <icedwater> maxus: Well, my / on benoit is 48G, of which I'm using 37G. That's including /home. On guerrero, I have a 8.4G partition for / and a 12G for /home, but each of those is only 50-60% used.
[14:40] <icedwater> inimical: Pedantic, what's that? :P I prefer specific :P
[14:40] <maxus> and the swap partition should be equal to the sleep image plus a could of gig, right?
[14:41] <maxus> i guess 4.5 gig is enough
[14:41] <icedwater> Would be good, but I personally never had the sleep thing work out nicely for me, so I usually have less swap and just not hibernate it.
[14:41] <maxus> could=couple
[14:41] <maxus> autocorrect was being a bit too eager there...
[14:41] <icedwater> maxus: I think 2GiB is a little more than sufficient.
[14:42] <maxus> icedwater: the netbook seems to hibernate whenever i press the sleep button
[14:42] <icedwater> Yeah, if it works for you, give it swap then :)
[14:42] <icedwater> Though I think 4.5GB is still enormous.
[14:43] <maxus> i guess suspend is equal to hibernate
[14:43] <elfgoh> maxus: I think that's the case for swap if you want to suspend/hibernate properly
[14:44] <maxus> modern applications and browsers typically eat excessive amounts of swap
[14:44] <maxus> elfgoh: you mean you never hibernate? so you power off the thing when you go from one place to another?
[14:45] <onetom> modern = bloated snot pellet shit piles?
[14:45] <maxus> i find it's always good to have a bit more swap than the bare minimum
[14:45] <maxus> I've set aside 8GB on my macbook
[14:46] <maxus> 4GB for the sleep image and 4GB swap
[14:46] <maxus> and yes, sometimes my swap is 3-4 GB
[14:46] <onetom> it's alwayss good to have a some swap space for the memleaking apps :)
[14:47] <onetom> i run god on our servers to monitor rails apps
[14:47] <onetom> the author of god claims it's not mleaking
[14:47] <maxus> exactly, even firefox leaks
[14:47] <onetom> but on a fucking buguntu it eats up 1G+ in a week :)
[14:48] <maxus> except the firefox team calls it a feature, since they store things you have recently seen in ram for fast access
[14:48] <onetom> but we have 10G swap on 8G boxes..
[14:48] <elfgoh> onetom: heh. What distro are you using on that netbook of yours btw?
[14:48] <onetom> jaunty netbook remix
[14:49] <onetom> chormium

[15:36] <icedwater> Which mobile broadband plan is best? (Planning to get a dongle so my mum can have network everywhere, but she's not sure of her usage.)
[15:37] <icedwater> The broadband plans are paid by the month, right? You don't have to sign a two-year contract for that?
[15:39] <ruiwen> M1's plans are unlimited i think, and not as expensive as Singtel/Starhub, but i'm not sure about how good the connectivity is
[15:40] <kelvinq> singtel's the best, imho.
[15:41] <kelvinq> used to be 5gb unlimited.
[15:41] <kelvinq> but recently they up to 50gb unlimited silently.
[15:41] <kelvinq> that should be more than enough for your mom.
[15:41] <icedwater> I'm leaning towards Starhub, because she already has a phone plan there... though I don't think they can work out an add-on and sell her the dongle for a lower price right?
[15:41] <icedwater> kelvinq: I think 1GB is more than enough for most people..
[15:42] <kelvinq> icedwater: i remember bill gates saying something to that tune too.
[15:42] <icedwater> Well, it's not been that long since I said it. :D
[15:43] <icedwater> Seriously, if you don't Youtube, and you only check your mail now and then, there's no need for more than, say, 50MB of data.
[15:43] <elfgoh> ruiwen: do you have any idea if the ticketing system by comcen has a project page somewhere?
[15:43] <icedwater> 100MB should be enough of a buffer I think?
[15:43] <icedwater> Even with relatively constant web surfing and SSH connections I've never gone above 300ish.
[15:44] <ruiwen> elfgoh: RT? i think it's internal
[15:44] <ruiwen> elfgoh: why?
[15:45] <elfgoh> ruiwen: ah not open source?
[15:45] <elfgoh> or is it open source but only internal?

[15:45] <ruiwen> elfgoh: oh you mean for their project itself? and not NUS's implementation?
[15:45] <onetom> however i dont even have a flat where i can use it :) does any of u want it? :)
[15:46] <ruiwen> elfgoh: it's open source.. this is it i think http://bestpractical.com/rt/
[15:46] <elfgoh> ruiwen: My boss was asking about ticketing systems. I thought Comcen developed their own?

[16:03] <elfgoh> for a price of $20/mth.
