[0:00] * elfgoh (n=dingding@adsl7.dyn83.pacific.net.sg) has joined #linuxnus
[0:02] * elfgoh__ (n=elfgoh_i@119.234.21.22) Quit ()
[0:20] <elfgoh> Oh so Karmic Beta is out
[0:28] * kelvinq (n=kelvinq@121.7.88.165) has joined #linuxnus
[0:45] <icedwater> Nice ... also, I met Soo Yuen Jien earlier.
[0:49] <icedwater> I'll send the details to coreteam, but in short, what's going to happen is there'll be a 30-45 minute supervised play session with Mac OS X, Windows 7 and a Linux distro of our choice.
[0:51] <icedwater> 25 students will be divided into groups to experience the systems. And there should be someone on hand to supervise silently, ie be the lifeguard.
[0:56] <icedwater> So we need to decide: which distro to set up, where to get a computer, and who to be the volunteer.
[0:56] <icedwater> It's going to be on Oct 16.
[0:58] <hyperair> ubuntu!
[1:01] * gento_ (n=utm-oss@203.205.48.60.jb02-home.tm.net.my) Quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[1:05] <icedwater> Heh that was what I was thinking, but I'm biased too, I'm more familiar with *buntu than other distros.
[1:06] <icedwater> And it would probably give the best impression too :P
[1:06] <elfgoh> Think RC for Karmic will be out by then
[1:07] <icedwater> Hmm... would it still be a little buggy, though?
[1:08] <elfgoh> icedwater: depends. Usually it is same as the final
[1:08] <icedwater> Hm, OK. I usually hold off on upgrading for very long ... heh.
[1:10] <icedwater> So, tentatively, Karmic RC.
[1:10] <icedwater> KDE or Gnome better?
[1:10] <icedwater> Or would that be a moot point because RCs come only with GNOME?
[1:11] * gento_ (n=utm-oss@139.201.48.60.jb02-home.tm.net.my) has joined #linuxnus
[1:11] * Jeremiah_Away is now known as JeremiahViztree
[1:11] <elfgoh> icedwater: The releases of akk varuabts are synchronised as much as possible
[1:12] <icedwater> That's good news.
[1:12] <elfgoh> oh i got my date wrong
[1:13] <elfgoh> RC released on 22nd
[1:16] <icedwater> Hm, OK. Then we should stick to Intrepid?
[1:16] * JeremiahViztree is now known as Jeremiah_Away
[1:44] * kelvinq (n=kelvinq@121.7.88.165) Quit ()
[1:54] <icedwater> And who would be available for the actual event? I think we need to decide that.
[1:55] <icedwater> None of the alumni should be involved, as far as possible.
[2:05] * yq (n=chatzill@bb219-74-11-117.singnet.com.sg) Quit ("ChatZilla 0.9.85 [Firefox-3.5 3.5.3/20090910172411]")

[2:37] <icedwater> On a side note, anyone played with LFS before?
[2:38] <elfgoh> icedwater: a long time ago
[2:39] <schiv> not too long ago
[2:51] <icedwater> Hmm... cool. Did you use the automated build scripts? Or set it up yourself?
[2:52] <icedwater> I'm wondering what the benefit is over, say, getting a stock kernel image and getting it to boot with a particular distro.
[2:57] <strohi> oh nice
[2:59] <icedwater> I have a feeling that LFS only works for x86?
[2:59] <icedwater> So, say, if you wanted to build a custom distro for an MP3 player, you'd need to roll your own?
[3:00] <icedwater> Or at any rate not use LFS.
[3:00] <hyperair> imo LFS would work for x86_64 as well
[3:01] <icedwater> OK, probably, but I'm more concerned with the class of computer, you know, as in general-purpose vs pretty much embedded.
[3:01] <icedwater> As in, dual core is probably not my problem :P
[3:07] <hyperair> yes yes
[3:07] <hyperair> heh
[3:07] <icedwater> :P
[3:07] <hyperair> well if you're giong to be rolling out linux for a mp3 player, you better be able to interface with its buttons
[3:08] <hyperair> and display something on screen
[3:10] <schiv> everything from scratch and upstream, compiled..the whole binutils shebang. but i didn't use their livecd.
[3:11] <schiv> i think it might be beneficial for that purpose (embedded?)
[3:12] <schiv> unless of course there is already a "linux for media players"..which you could respin
[3:16] <icedwater> Hmm. Yeah that too.
[3:17] <icedwater> Or linux for mobile phones...
[3:17] <icedwater> The media player in question is a Zen X-Fi which has a 9-key keypad.
[3:17] <icedwater> Almost phone-ish.

[21:35] <jamesty1> ruiwen: omg
[21:36] <jamesty1> ruiwen: what kind of code is that
[21:36] <ruiwen> jamesty1: as far as i can tell it's HTMLJavascriptPHP
[21:36] <strohi> nice mix
[21:36] <jamesty1> ruiwen: lol nice screenshot
[21:37] <jamesty1> ruiwen: did you make that yourself

[21:39] <ruiwen> the code
[21:39] <ruiwen> almost couldn't fit it all on my screen to capture it
[21:39] <jamesty1> i see a nested html table

[21:39] <ruiwen> haha
[21:39] <ruiwen> jamesty1: nested tables you say? at least you're making more progress than me =P
[21:40] <jamesty1> you should refactor that ;)
[21:40] <ruiwen> soon as i figure out how it works =P
[21:41] <ruiwen> or what it does
[21:41] <elfgoh> ruiwen: not having line breaks is TOTALLY unforgivable

[21:44] <ruiwen> elfgoh: just looked at the original code.. no breaks there either it seems
[21:45] <elfgoh> ruiwen: am wondering if it could be an editor issue.... it's insane not to have line breaks
[21:45] <jarick> ruiwen: Can't you feed it into a code prettifier?
[21:46] <elfgoh> ruiwen: there's this thing called htmltidy i think.... try it
[21:46] <jarick> ruiwen: 160 wide.
[21:46] <ruiwen> elfgoh: jarick: good point.. shall try
[21:46] <ruiwen> jarick: ah.. that will probably reduce the number of wrapped lines somewhat
[21:46] <ruiwen> shall check out prettifiers

[22:36] <jarick> No, the specific ARM7 processor.
[22:36] <icedwater> dwu: What's the studying for, though?
