[19:34] <strohi> do you have these msdnaa program in sg, too?
[19:35] <davidchua> yeah there's msdnaa here
[19:37] <elfgoh> davidchua: so any hackerspaces stuff at the end? I left the teabreak
[19:37] <davidchua> was meng's talk after the teabreak of before?
[19:37] <davidchua> I have mild amnesia
[19:37] <elfgoh> davidchua: before
[19:38] <elfgoh> davidchua: but think he was supposed to be part of the panel discussion at the end
[19:38] <davidchua> yeah, but nothing about hackerspace after that
[19:38] <elfgoh> davidchua: and he is freeside btw
[19:38] <davidchua> hi freeside :)
[19:39] <davidchua> http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/10/open-source !
[19:40] <strohi> i dont like msdnaa, all these wintroll come and ask every second day, where to get a legal copy, instead to ask, where to get a msdnaa account, so stupid :(
[19:45] <jarick> strohi: Can I get a serial number from your msdnaa account? :D
[19:45] <strohi> why? :p
[19:45] <jarick> strohi: Because I hear you can get lots of warez from this "msdnaa" thing. :D
[19:45] <strohi> i can gave you a legal copy of gentoo, ubuntu or debian/squeeze :p
[19:45] <jarick> Really? Where?
[19:46] <jarick> strohi: But you're right, I hate the people who ask for serial numbers.
[19:46] <jarick> At least with vista or windows 7 it's easier, I just give them the image without the serial.
[19:46] <jarick> It's the same as the trial image.
[19:46] <strohi> the funny thing is, only the computer science and economy students got this msdnaa, the technic people not *g*
[19:47] <strohi> ^^
[19:47] <strohi> i would like a msdnaa like program for linux
[19:47] * jarick wonders why the econs student got it.
[19:47] <jarick> strohi: I want something like technet for the linux kernel
[19:47] <strohi> get your expecialy student only linux distro :x
[19:47] <strohi> technet?
[19:48] <jarick> strohi: The technet api references.
[19:48] <jarick> And deployment guide.
[19:48] <jarick> And whitepapers.
[19:48] <jarick> Some of it is downright useful.
[19:48] <strohi> hm, k
[19:48] <jarick> And consistent
[19:49] <strohi> the main goal, should that i may not do the programer lessons on damn messy winclients :(
[19:49] <davidchua> I don't think I can ever program ever again on windows.
[19:49] <davidchua> not without my trusty vim
[19:49] <strohi> the workflow ... is on holiday :D

[20:12] <strohi> elfgoh, nice

[20:15] <elfgoh> yq: the next time I see it I am going to make sure I stab a needle into your arm

[22:06] <davidchua> what would you name a webapp where you can share any content with one another?
[22:06] <davidchua> (who's following you)
[22:06] <davidchua> that is not twitter ;p
[22:06] <sng> Facebook.
[22:09] <ziroday> identi.ca?
[22:18] <davidchua> share.r
[22:19] <sng> So. Joking aside.
[22:20] <sng> What sets this apart from the 4.325 million other apps/services to do the same thing?
[22:29] <davidchua> actually, nothing much really, its pretty much the same except that the focus is on sending links to one another, and the ability to view them in an easy to read format
[22:30] <davidchua> the ability for users to create groups, where people with similar interests can signup together, to receive whatever links that people 'push' to that group
[22:34] <davidchua> does that interest you?
[22:37] <sng> Nope. The problem with such a thing is that as much as the UI and layout for facebook sucks wet hairy monkey balls through a bent straw it does the same thing well enough and everybody is already there.
[22:38] <sng> It's a good idea. That's already been done well enough. You need to bring something new or cool enough to shift people.
[22:39] <davidchua> what if its not a sole standalone
[22:39] <sng> What does that mean?
[22:40] <davidchua> but actually allows the sharing to occur across exisitng social networks be it twitter/facebook?
[22:44] <sng> So ... friendfeed?
[22:44] <sng> davidchua: It's a damned good idea. Which is why it's already been done. I'm not tryining to be a wet blanket but that really is how I see it.
[22:46] <triplez> hellooo
[22:46] <davidchua> hmmm.
[22:47] <sng> davidchua: None of which is to say you shouldn't try. But the thing I think you should keep in mind is that you have to do *something* better.
[22:47] <elfgoh> davidchua: btw what do you think of the hackerspace at Aljunied compared to Haji Lane
[22:47] <sng> davidchua: If I were to offer a suggestion I'd focus not so much on the webapp portion of it but on making a killer Android/iPhone client to do it.
[22:48] <sng> That would get folks interested and set you apart.
[22:48] <davidchua> sng: I appreciate the cander and you're right.
[22:48] <sng> The future of all that stuff is in the pocket.
[22:48] <sng> davidchua: Yeah. I figured. It's just good to make sure.
[22:50] <davidchua> I'm not sure if this is killer enough, but basically, the app would allow users to 'subscribe' to other users or groups. Users could than create groups (like a mailing list) where users can send links to the group which will be then sent across all its followers. My idea is that this would bring people to form niche interest groups like say (singapore musician group) where users can then send interesting and cool videos/news/
[22:51] <davidchua> got the idea actually when I was thinking about how cool audiogalaxy would be if it didn't die of in the early p2p days
[22:51] <davidchua> anybody remember that app?
[22:51] <davidchua> elfgoh: I'd say aljunied ;)
[22:53] <elfgoh> davidchua: I see. I had some feedback that some preferred the Bohemian vibe in Haji Lane area
[22:54] <davidchua> but then again, I could be biased because I thought the aljunied video showed more of the place than the other videos.
[22:55] <sng> davidchua: I'd see that as being much more useful as a mobile app. For the simple reason if I'm in front of a computer doing the same thing across the two or three services people really care about takes almost no marginal effort. But I can see how having one app to do that on a phone would appeal to a lot of people.
[22:56] <elfgoh> Someone wants to bring broadway to Joo Chiat: http://www.myjoochiat.com/
[22:57] <davidchua> sng: I think that's an interesting point. thanks for that, will definetly think about mobile apps.
[22:57] <sng> Coolio.
[23:00] <elfgoh> yq: is there any bohemian vibe at all in Aljunied?
[23:01] <yq> elfgoh: there is romance in the area
[23:01] <yq> and horfun
[23:01] <elfgoh> yq: ~.~
[23:01] <yq> elfgoh: Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, involving musical, artistic or literary pursuits, with few permanent ties. Bohemians can be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds. ?
[23:02] <elfgoh> yq: your wikipedia fu is strong
[23:02] <yq> hah..
[23:02] <yq> not as strong as your leg in longkang fu
[23:03] * elfgoh stabs a needle in yq
[23:03] <yq> hrmm... actually parts of joochiat/siglap has that feel
[23:04] <elfgoh> yq: but that's quite far from aljunied right?
[23:04] <yq> yeah
[23:04] <yq> hey im heading out man..
[23:04] <yq> talk again later
[23:04] <elfgoh> wah so late go where sia
[23:05] <elfgoh> meet the microsoft gal ah
[23:05] <elfgoh> triplez: yq aiming the girl at the counter just now
[23:05] <triplez> LOL
[23:05] <triplez> she's married
[23:05] <elfgoh> awwwwwwwwww yq don't be sad
[23:09] <elfgoh> ok there is one musuem in Aljunied area. http://www.museums.com.sg/MRM_tsh.asp
[23:11] <elfgoh> And theatre school too: http://www.artsinmotion.com/about.html
[23:11] * yq (n=chatzill@bb121-7-185-190.singnet.com.sg) Quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
[23:17] * triplez (n=triplez@116.12.165.2) Quit ()
[23:26] <davidchua> is that acres in revenge of the fallen?
[23:44] <freeside> yeah, unfortunately i got some feedback that most prefer the bohemian vibe at kampong glam as well
[23:44] <freeside> i feel a bit bad because elfgoh did go and fall into longkang for the sake of aljunied
[23:45] <freeside> one guy said he was in favour of aljunied but it turns out he lives on lorong 26
[23:45] <freeside> which is why
[23:45] <freeside> i talked to about 5 other guys who said they preferred kampong glam
[23:45] <elfgoh> freeside: well who did you get the feedback from? Andy and Hugh?
[23:45] <elfgoh> oh ok
[23:45] <freeside> one guy said he would be willing to take a desk, but the location was critical, and he would only take a desk if it was at bugis :(
[23:46] <freeside> dunno who it was, i didn't get his card.
[23:46] <elfgoh> freeside: so you asked people who were at eChelon? Not our current $512 pledgies?
[23:46] <elfgoh> I know Hugh shared the sentiment.
[23:47] <freeside> most of the $512 pledgies that i've spoken to have also expressed a preference for bugis, but we should ping everyone who's done any pledging at all on the mailing list and ask what they think.
[23:47] <freeside> the buUuk guy also said he would consider getting a desk, and he wanted kampong glam also
[23:48] <freeside> but anyway, i have asked people to go and make their opinions known on the mailing list so we can have some rough idea what the consensus is
[23:48] <freeside> hard to figure out what the group consensus is if everybody is just quiet
[23:48] <freeside> so maybe tomorrow somebody will say something
[23:48] <freeside> i'm wandering off to bed for now
[23:48] <freeside> those two girls at the reception desk were super cute
[23:48] <elfgoh> freeside: ok.
[23:49] <elfgoh> freeside: let me create a comparison spreadsheet
[23:49] <freeside> http://mengwong.com/photography/20091024-e27echelon/dsc_3924.html
[23:49] <elfgoh> then ask for discussion... before we get some voting done
[23:49] <freeside> good idea, or we can just track an additional attribute either on the rentals spreadsheet or the donors spreadsheet
[23:50] <freeside> http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Aq0iCnT5pJBZdGdLVGl3T2JBSVhkVk5kdzQtRFFYWEE&hl=en
[23:50] <elfgoh> right ok
[23:52] <elfgoh> freeside: btw do we have a detailed unit showing Kandahar?
[23:52] <elfgoh> s/unit/video/
[23:52] <freeside> mmm, dun have. only have photos.
[23:54] <elfgoh> freeside: is there any chance that we can have access to Kandahar tomorrow to take a video? I actually thought that the place looked bigger in the photos
[23:54] <elfgoh> Might be just me
[23:54] <freeside> kandahar actually quite small :(
[23:54] <elfgoh> I really forsee hotdesking to be a real squeeze at the top
[23:54] <freeside> but, better to feel crowded for 6 months and then expand in to scape
[23:55] <freeside> than to feel like it's empty
[23:55] <elfgoh> 4/5 desks will be fine.. but 8 desks is crazy
[23:55] <freeside> we might have to put the desks on the lower level and the conference / sofas upstairs.
[23:55] <freeside> there aren't actually going to be that many people there during the day everyday.
[23:55] <freeside> so far yanyun has said she and her friend want to be there.
[23:56] <freeside> all the other $512 level people are basically sponsoring.
[23:56] <freeside> alex, hugh, john, ming young, and i are all going to be there on evenings and weekends, not during the day
[23:56] <freeside> i'm trying to get mark organ in, and some other chap from echelon expressed interest
[23:57] <freeside> i personally do prefer kampong glam for the atmosphere, and i know that hugh, john, and bernard think so too
[23:58] <elfgoh> freeside: ok i and j columns added for location preference and preference comments
[23:58] <freeside> thanks
