Page movement

Suggest we move this page to "Introductory Linux Talk" and clean up the text (expanding appreviations, correcting grammar). Since the talk seemed to garner pretty good response and people are asking for the soft copy of the slides, I think we can expect quite a few hits on this page.

Ruiwen 01:07, 26 August 2006 (SGT)

Perhaps it will be a better idea to move the page to "Introductory Linux Talk Planning"? Then create an "Introductory Linux Talk" page with the agenda and slides.

Lecture announcements

Liaising with lecturers of Lvl 1000 CS modules. Of course a slide or two needs to be done for these. What catchy and innovative way can we use to make the announcement?

Elfgoh 17:58, 18 August 2006 (SGT)

Logistics

  • Preparation of Linux CDS: There's an agreement with CompClub that we will give away free Linux CDs. We would need to confirm the distro to give out and the number to give out.
  • Putting up of Posters/Sign postings leading up to venue: Do we need any approval from NUSSU or is Comp club handlign these for us?
Elfgoh 17:58, 18 August 2006 (SGT)
  • Doesn't seem like we need direct NUSSU approval as we're doing this under the auspices of CompClub

Talk content

Any suggestions for the talk? Nothing's really fixed yet as to the content. Here's some suggestions from Ruiwen.

  • NUS VPN
  • SOC VPN
  • PEAP
  • Samba sharing
  • NUSSNET domain printing
  • Downloading and save webcasts

One suggestion I can think of is:

  • Commandline survival in a nutshell.

Will these topics be too advanced or too simple for the target audience?

Elfgoh 18:52, 18 August 2006 (SGT)

If the target are SoC and Engin students *basic* CLI maybe be a little too simple, seeing as SoC students are supposed to be familiar with the Sunfire environment while Engin students also use Sunfire for a while for their C programming module.

Ruiwen 03:02, 19 August 2006 (SGT)

It depends on whether we are talking about

  1. Ex CONFIDENTIAL: NUS domination through Linux
  2. Surviving the Linux Halocaust

Besides, would SoC and Engineering students actually program in Sunfire, or just copy their stuff in after coding?

Junhao82 03:31, 19 August 2006 (SGT)

Eh? Holocaust? <-- Subject matter?

Whether all of them program in Sunfire or not, I'm not sure.. but at least they should be able to navigate at the CLI using cd, ls and friends.. I think we can give them that. Submissions of assignments are on the CLI anyway, so if they can't navigate, they can't submit.

Actually I was referring to tips on how to make the CLI more friendly, such as tab tab. (Actually that's the only one tip I know =( ) Perhaps one possiblity is fish aka Friendly Interactive Shell.

Hey Junhao, I think this topic is too deep for our intended audience IMHO. Sure catch no ball one. I've no idea what you meant actually.

Anyway, another NUS centric topic I can think of is how to record tv programs from NUSCast.

Elfgoh 12:24, 19 August 2006 (SGT)

LF: One thing abt fish thought, it that while they may be able to use if they have their own *NIX boxes, it's not really an option on Sunfire as we aren't allowed to install our own packages. So maybe basic CLI enhancements might do. Eg. tips for .emacs, .vimrc customisation and stuff. tab tab completion.. symlinks.. keybindings for copy, paste and cut on the CLI.. searching your command history.. mass renaming of files.. find and replace using sed.. slice and dice with awk.. stuff like that?

Regarding the recording of programs from NUSCast, the process is identical to recording webcasts. Legal issues aside of course. =)

Time and Space

  • 24/06/2006, Thur: Execution of talk
    • 445pm: Setting up of registration booth
    • 515pm: Commencement of talk
    • 615pm: end talk + Q&A
    • 625pm: Provide information on welcome tea and T-shirt + acknowledgements
    • 630pm: End

I suggest not stretching till 7pm. Ruiwen, will that be fine with Compclub?

Elfgoh 17:58, 18 August 2006 (SGT)

It's possible. The room will be booked for stated time, but we don't have to use the full length of it. Similar to our arrangements with Sci ITU for the S16 Meeting Room. We could use the remaining time just for mingling I guess? Give ppl time to wrap up their chats and ask the questions they want.

Ruiwen, are we able to get Harish Pillay or will this be our show?

Elfgoh 17:58, 18 August 2006 (SGT)

We should plan for us going it alone. I've emailed Harish though. Will update on his reply. CC'ed to Coreteam.
